DIAMOND CLARITY

KEYS TO UNDERSTANDING DIAMOND CLARITY

Clarity measures the amount and size of the small imperfections that occur in almost every diamond. According to most jewelers this component has the smallest impact on the appearance of a diamond. The clarity of a diamond refers to the very small and natural imperfections that occur in almost every diamond except for the rarest exceptions. The most common names used to describe these imperfections are inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external). Those diamonds that have the smallest and least occurrences of these imperfections receive the highest clarity grades.

Flawless (FL)

This is the best grade for diamonds. There are no internal or external imperfections visible under 10x magnification. This grading represents the rarest of diamonds.

Internally Flawless (IF)

This grading is used to describe diamonds that have no inclusions and contain only minor blemishes visible using 10x magnification.

Very Very Slightly Included (VVS1 VVS2)

This grade is given to diamonds that have minor inclusions but appear to be perfect. Only the most trained jewelers under optimal viewing circumstances can detect these imperfections.

Very Slightly Included (VS1 VS2)

This grade indicates slight imperfections that are visible under 10x magnification but are considered minor.

Slightly Included (SI1 SI2)

These diamonds have visible minor imperfections and inclusions which are visible under 10x magnification.

Imperfect (I1 I2 I3)

This diamond grade can be found in many jewelry stores. The diamond has inclusions that are apparent under 10x magnification and may affect brilliance and transparence.

THE RIGHT DIAMOND FOR YOU

Many consumers worry about purchasing a diamond that has imperfections. However, it is the vocabulary that has this profound effect. The reality is that many slightly included diamonds are beautiful and only the most trained professionals with the right tools can see these imperfections. It is likely that once a diamond is purchased nobody will ever view those imperfections. What is more important is that the rarest and most expensive diamonds are exactly what they are, rare and very uncommon. Slightly included diamonds are beautiful, very popular, and offer the best value.
